Week one has passed and the only winner so far has been Mother Nature and the Rain Man. Thank goodness this was only a practice card at Centre for Speed and not the real thing. That begins this week and it kicks off with a bang!
Saturday, at Scotia Speedworld, the Carquest Pro Stock Tour makes its initial offering of the 2008 season. A large field of entrants will be vying for the early lead in the points race with Sandy Livingston Jr among the group. Hopes are high that this will be the most exciting Pro Stock Tour season yet, coming on the heels of this tour being the best run in Canada acording to one of the leading race publications.
Despite others who think otherwise, I still think that PEI's Chris Hughes is going to push everyone to the limit this year. He has good sponsorship, a new car, and talent by the barrel full. Only time will tell but that's my opinion.
Also on tap this Saturday is the opening of the newly renamed Speedway 660 (formerly NBIS) with racing in all three divisions. I look for Brian MacNaughton to do well in ProStock once his Rookie rule races are done. That shouldn't take too long as he was a veteran driver in the Sportsman series and a perennial top runner and knows the track well. Look for another battle for supremacy between the "Nackawac Nite Train", Brian Gillespie and Glyn Nott for the championship with Nott coming out on top. However, at Spedway 660, you never know for sure as they have a deep talent pool in this division. With Joe Albert gone, the Street Stocks are wide open with a great deal of possible champions. I wouldn't hazard a guess at this point.
Sunday the action switches to nearby Centre for Speed in Shediac with heavy competition in all classes as well as the very competitive Sportsman Super Series. All classes will see action in the season opener and everyone wants that win on opening day so the action will be fast and furious.
Racing also begins at Raceway Park in PEI and Island Speedway in Cape Breton. The action is always hot and heavy at both tracks and fans are always in for a thrill or two.
On the tube, Lowes Motor Speedway is the scene of this week's Nascar race, the Coca Cola 600, the longest race on the Nascar schedule. Last week's All Star race, also at Lowes, was very exciting with an unlikely hero at the end of the night. Kasey Kahne captured this prestigious event after failing to qualify and being given a second chance by being voted in by the fans. He started dead last but picked up the million dollar payday.
The weather man is supposed to cooperate so lets get out in the fresh air and cheer these asphalt warriors on at a track near you. Gentlemen (and Ladies), Start Your Engines !!!
