It's that time of year at last. Speed Weekend at Speedway 660 promises to be one of the premier events of the 2008 season. The weekend kicks of on Friday night with a corn boil featuring some of the best corn anywhere, prepared by the Glyn Nott family and the #12 crew. Team that with music in the infield of the track, and you've got a great time !
Saturday, the racing begins in earnest with practice in all classes going on all day and then racing Saturday evening. The program features the O'Leary Pontiac Excitement 150 for Sportsman cars and usually draws the best Sportsmen from all over the Maritimes. The AOW will be racing as the support class for this evening. Action begins at 6pm and will keep you on the edge of your seat all night !
Sunday, the Pro Stocks start to wind up for the Peterbilt 250 with both the Street Stocks and Legends acting as support classes for this one. Racing begins at 2pm with the "big" one starting at 7pm. This is one of the richest events in the Maritimes with over 70,000 in total prize money and 15,000 guaranteed to the winner. with bonuses and lap money, the winner could pick up over 28,000.
This year the event has three "big" name entrants. Travis Kittleson is a competitor in several Tours and has raced in several Nationwide events while Andy Santerre has been a force to reckon with at many levels of competition. The biggest name of them all though is Ron Hornaday Jr. Hornaday is a current competitor on the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Tour and indeed is last year's champion in this division. He has also competed in both the Nationwide and Sprint Cup divisions as well.
Several PASS Tour competitors have entered this year's event as well. points leader and Atlantic Cat winner, Travis Benjamin, is entered as are Kirk Thibeau, winner of the "Best of the Best" series and a former winner of the Peterbilt and Johnny Clark, last year's winner and perrenial front runner everywhere he races.
Last, but not least, the Steve Waylon band will entertain between the end of gualifying and the start of the Peterbilt 250. What more could anyone ask in a weekend of entertainment and nail biting action.
Elsewhere in the Maritimes, Centre for Speed is running a huge demolition event on Saturday evening including a figure eight event. If you are a member of the "crash and bang" set, then this is the place for you. The action should be exciting !
Looking back for a moment, Sandy Livingston Jr. had a good run last weekend at Raceway Park, finishing 14th in a tough 28 car field. As a result, the team inched closer to the elusive 20th spot in the standings. With Shediac next on the Schedule, Livingston stands a good chance of improving his standing some more.
Well folks, the Malibu is being packed as we speak and I'm sure you know where I'm heading. See you there !!!
