Riverside IWK interviews 004

Eric Amirola - “Proud to Drive the Number 8”

Eric Amirola, originally from Tampa, Florida, now resides in Morrisville, North Carolina. “ My grandfather raced dirt Sprint cars all up and down the south east. I’d go with him. When he decided to give up on it, he put me to work on his race cars.”

Amirola went on to say “Then he gave me the opportunity to race. He bought me a go-kart. One thing led to another. I raced some late models, then up to open wheel Modifieds. It’s a lot of fun to come here and get back to the Grass Roots.... back to where I got started.”

The discussion then turned to his involvement with DEI Motorsports. “It’s a great company to work for. They’re really working hard to make it a better company. They’re doing a really good job of giving us fast race cars, week in and week out so it makes it a lot of fun to be a

part of that. I am going to be the primary driver of the #8 next year and I’m really looking forward to it.”

Since Mark Martin is his mentor, I asked him about the man. “He’s a great guy to learn from and a lot of fun to be around and work with. He’s been around the sport a long time so there’s lots to learn.”

This is Amirola’s second venture into Canada to race, having done the Busch (now Nationwide) race in Montreal last year.

Many of the drivers went to the IWK on Thursday, prior to the 250. Amirola was one of them. “It’s great. The IWK ...... that’s special. I’m very fortunate. I have a lot of blessings in my life ..... being able to grow up and love racing ..... have the opportunity to make a living from it. These kids are not nearly as fortunate. It makes me feel good to give back to the community and to see the smiles .... they have so many problems. When you think you’re having a bad day, it’s not really that bad. It puts it all in perspective.”

In closing, I asked him about the upcoming race and the track. “The track is awesome. It’s one of the nicest tracks I’ve been to. I’ve been at a lot of short tracks and it’s right up there. It’s incredible. They spared no expense, that’s for sure.” Amirola continued “My car is pretty good. We practiced here. We have a competitive race car and we should have some fun. I’m excited. I’m looking forward to coming back next year as well.”
