Riverside IWK interviews 002

Travis Benjamin - Keep It in the Family

Travis Benjamin is a family man who hails from Belfast, Maine. “I’ve been at it sixteen years. My father always raced cars and I always helped him. Once he saw that I liked it, he got out and I started.”

“I raced go-karts from the age of 14 to 16” Benjamin went on to say “and then six cylinders at Unity Raceway in Maine. My father was number 17 so I kept it in the family.”

Benjamin was at Riverside preparing for the IWK 250 when I caught up to him. “Awesome. Just the people around here are so friendly. There are no fans better than Canadians. My mother and her

family are from PEI. They attend the races in Halifax but not here. I love coming up here. I’ve never been on a race track like this. We always have good races here. I’ve been here twice before. Once we were in the lead until the car broke. Last year, we were going for the lead and kinda got wrecked. We always had good races but never finished one yet.

He went on to say “With Irving being my sponsor, this would be a good race to win. They’re from here and there are Irvings everywhere. In 2002, when Irving came on board with me, the Irving people from the States used to come to the races and got excited about it. Now I can’t get them to come. If they would come to one like this... there are going to be thousands of fans ..... campers everywhere ..... Irving stations everywhere .... but without TV coverage, it’s harder to pick up sponsors.”

This year, Benjamin is running the PASS Tour and is currently second in the points. The future certainly is bright for this fine young man.
