Donald Chisholm - the Antigonish Connection

Donald Chisholm graduated from St Mary’s University in 1999 and since then has been heavily involved in the racing community. “ I finished university in ‘99 then went to a racing school in St Augustine, Florida. I came home from there and bought Scott Kelly’s old late model car and showed up here at Riverside for my first race July 14th, 1999.”

Chisholm went on to say “I’ve always driven super late models until last year when I went Pro Stock. I’ve driven a Sportsman in practice but never raced one. I’ve raced a lot of races in Pro Stock but this is only my second time in one of these (NASCAR CT series cars).

Since Don Chisholm had prepared a car to race in the NASCAR Canadian Tire series, who better to ask about the differences between these and the Maritime Pro Stocks. He was only too willing to explain. “ These cars are 3000 pounds plus the driver. A pro stock weighs 2850 with the driver so these cars are much heavier and a little narrower. A good Sportsman here will go 16.8. We’re going about 14.7. The Pro Stocks go 14.2-14.4. I expect tonight these guys will be around 14.7 or 8. They make sure everyone is quite equal. they’re a fun car to drive. They’ll put on a great race tonight. They’re different than the Late Models for sure, to drive.”

With word around the track that Chisholm had a “home track” advantage so I asaked him his opinion. “Yeah, these guys race so many different tracks, they’ll have this one figured out within the first hour of practice. Some have asked me questions but I’ve asked them questions too. They are a great bunch of guys to race with.”

From his excitement and enthusiasm, I questioned him on whether he was planning to join the tour next year. “I may do a handful of them but they do a few road course and that’s something I’ve never done. You have to have a second car for that. Depending on the local schedule next year, I may look at doing two or three where we have the car now. It’s hard to get a full season off from work. They race from Vernon, BC to here. It’s 5000 kms from Ontario to Vernon and that’s a lot of travelling and it’s hard to get that many crew guys to go on the road for that long”.

With that Chisholm headed off to help prepare the car for the upcoming race.
