Definitions

Aerodynamics: The study of how air and motion around, over and under a race car create pressure on the race car. Apron: The paved portion of the race track that seperates the racing surface from the infield. Banking: The slope of the race track from the apron to the outside wall, measured in degrees. DNQ: Abbreviation for "did not qualify". Groove: The preferred path of a race car on a race track. Also called " the line" Handling: The performance of a car while racing, in reference to the chassis, tires and suspension. These components can be adjusted to suit the driver. Loose: A handling condition which occurs when the rear tires lose traction causing the rear of the car to slide toward the outside. Pole: The lead starting position in a race. Scuffed Tire: A race tire that has already been used. Set Up: Adjustments made by the crew to gain optimal performance. Stagger: The difference in circumference between the tires. On an oval track, it is preferable to have slightly larger right side tires than left to help turn the car. Sticker Tire: A new race tire. The manufacturer's sticker is still on. Tight: A handling condition which occurs when the front tires lose traction causing the front of the car to slide toward the outside.

During a race the starter will use rolled up flags to give information or warnings to drivers without stopping the race. Their meanings are:

The race will begin or restart on the next lap
The halfway point of the race has been reached
There are only two laps remaining in the race
When pointed at a driver, this is a warning that he is close to disqualification
