Andy Santerre

Andy Santerre hails from Cherryfield, Maine and now lives in Charlotte, North Carolina.

“I have raced since 1989 at Speedway 95 in Bangor, Maine. A bunch of friends and I decided to race. I was dating a girl at that time whose Dad raced which got me interested, so we built a car and went racing.”

When I asked Santerre about the 54 number, Santerre explained “My number that I race in my series is 44. This car belongs to Ben Graham and that’s his number. My Dad raced back in the 60’s and 44 was also his number. I couldn’t get 44 when I started so I took the 25. Then I raced the 15 for a while for another team but when I started Andy Santerre Motorsports, 44 was available and it has been my number ever since.”

Santerre won 4 Busch East series championships from 2002 - 2005.

This being his first visit to the Maritimes, I asked him what he thought. “ This is my first time here. This is the way racing used to be in the US. They still race like this in Maine. This track is fun, it’s a great little race track. What’s cool about it is that a lot of tracks don’t have that second groove, but here you can run side by side. It’s something you don’t see a lot of now.”

The subject changed at this point to the car he was driving. “ I haven’t been around these cars a whole lot. They’re a little like the Super Late Models but it’s a different type of car than I’m used to. I think it’s neat. It’s grassroots racing. Guys rolling around on the ground without concrete pads show that they really want to be here. It brings out the best in them.”

Santerre concluded with “ I appreciate the staff here at Speedway 660 for getting me to come. I know they brought a few other guys up from North Carolina and we’re having a good time. I want to thank my friend Kirk Thibeau for pushing me to come. We do a lot of snowmobiling together and he really pushed me. I pretty much did it for him and the fans.”
