the trip to the IWK this year, along with Smith’s racecar. “I didn’t get to go last year because I got in late but this year I got to see the kids ... see the hospital ... and hopefully brighten their day a little bit. They were all pretty pumped up and so were we. We gave out hats, t-shirts, bags and autographs of course. Actually I had one of them beat me in Nintendo Wii so I have to practice my video games.”
Being with the DEI Race Operation, the conversation moved to there. “One of the goals we set this year was to win the “Rookie Points” race. It’s a big deal. So far we’re not performing up to the expectations we hoped for when it comes to overall points standings but we’re leading in the “Rookie” race. I’m not where I want to be yet, but we’re getting better every week. Winning this “Rookie” deal will ease the sting of any other disappointments.”
Smith continued “It’s great working there. We have all the resources and all the people which we constantly rely on and the legacy behind the company that not many companies have. It’s an honour and we have to keep building on that legacy. We hope to get some wins before the year is out. Mark Martin and Martin Truex have come close and my team is getting better. Between all of us, we hope to get one or two in victory lane.”
Smith enjoys getting away from the hustle and bustle of his normal life. “we went down to the Bay on Friday and walked along the beach, just enjoying the view. It’s nice to get away and relax. I had some lobster.” Smith concluded with “I would like to come back for a vacation but due to the schedule, it would be winter and a little snowy !!!”
